A letter from the Vendors:
We decided to buy in Yea because it is such a stunning area, and not too far from Melbourne. It is also a wonderful central point for exploring other regions such as Alexandra, Eildon, Mansfield, and Bulla.
It took quite a long time to find a property that had all the elements we were looking for – most small acreages on the market were boringly flat and uninspiring.
But eventually 71 Old Killingworth Road West came up for sale. It had a wonderfully interesting shape to the land – a lovely combination of hill and flat. The added bonus was long frontage to the Yea river with its own little ‘beach’, and just a short walk to the shops.
Even halfway up the hill you have a fantastic view of the Yea township and the surrounding landscape.
And the hill itself provides the perfect building site for an earth-sheltered house, with clever design using the shape of the hill to provide superb views from most rooms.
Access to the home would be via a winding driveway, starting near the upper boundary and curving around the hill to the entrance.
Earth-sheltered houses have a wonderful ‘wow’ factor because they blend in beautifully with the natural environment.
The property had some magnificent remnant forest trees but was a little bare along the boundary, so we ripped the land in preparation for planting. (Ripping is where a tractor is used to create grooves in the earth. These grooves help the soil retain moisture.)
Then we planted hundreds of trees, most of them indigenous to the area ...
Sustainability is the buzz word of the moment and the internet is full of information on earth-sheltered homes. Wikipedia gives a good summary:
